What makes a good live show? A question, we bet, many bands have pondered. It’s probably what led Slipknot to putting on their masks and similarly what led to David Bowie to blending genders. Intrigue. Enigmas. That was their thinking, and it’s well informed we think. They made great shows. But sometimes, it’s not just the performance or showmanship, it’s quite literally the sound itself.
We’ve been at too many shows where the sound has been plain awful. You can hear the band and the band can’t hear themselves; they’re singing out-of-key even though they have the tools to blow your mind! It’s not the band’s fault. Well, it’s not always the band’s fault. If they can’t hear themselves in their monitor it’s impossible to sing in key. A shot in the dark.
So, what exactly makes a good live show?
This one is sort of out of our hands, but definitely important. You need a good band or performer to be entertained. If you don’t, you won’t feel inclined to get up on that dance floor – that illuminated dance floor decorated with neons of all sorts, and that’s where you want to be really, don’t you?
Aesthetics are just as important as the sound when cultivating an atmosphere of fun and mirth. You need lights, and you need a lot of them. You need them to flash. A lot. Only then will you have a party on your hands. Only then will people start singing along and spend the night on their feet.
What we said earlier, really: you need to be able to hear what those people on stage are doing to be able to receive it well. And they need to be able to hear themselves. If you’ve never played a show, you won’t realise the agony of bad sound. But we’re sure you have been to the show, so you have felt the agony of bad sound. Only use the best!
Not all need to, but we like to have few drinks a good show! It makes us more inclined to sing along – and we do so with earnest attention… It is great. We love it.
